 “My Child loves this book!”

“Since buying this book it is all my child wants to read! The pictures are beautiful and the message is simple and effective! I love that I am teaching her that it is ok to have many different types of feelings and to understand that others may have these feelings! Such an important book to have in the rotation!”

- ANNA

We all have big feelings at times, including (and especially!) children.

What we often don’t have are the words to properly understand and direct our emotions.

Don’t be sad!
Calm down!
It’s not that bad!

These are common phrases many of us heard over and over again while growing up. We were told to stop crying, calm our anger, and brush our feelings aside.

We weren’t given the language, or the permission, to fully explore and acknowledge our emotions, leaving us confused, overwhelmed, and stuck as we try to raise our children with more emotional intelligence

"This book is for every parent who wants to teach their child self-awareness and compassion. This is such a lovely, insightful and modern book to help guide children toward identifying and understanding their emotions and articulating their needs. We can't start teaching children early enough to show themselves the same compassion we teach them to show others."

Our Instagram feeds are full of parenting advice like “Tell kids what they CAN do, not what they CAN’T” and “Let kids feel their feelings!”

We follow all the #gentleparenting and #emotionalhealth accounts, read overly complicated books on conscious parenting, trying to discern what will work for our children…

What if it were far simpler than all that?

What if adopting one simple philosophy about emotions could change your family dynamics in a profoundly positive way?

My Mama Says lays the groundwork for just that, using a lively group of animal friends to illustrate these simple truths:

  • Emotions live inside us all the time!
  • We don’t control emotions, and they don’t control us!
  • Emotions have one job: to deliver a message - our job is to listen!
  • Emotions always come in groups, never alone!
  • No emotion is ever “bad” or “wrong”
  • When big feelings happen, the loudest emotion can mask the messages the other emotions are trying to send, making it hard to direct how we feel
  • You are capable and empowered to identify, acknowledge, and direct your emotions in a healthy way

“It’s empowering for kids to understand that emotions do not control us, and we do not control our emotions. But they live inside us all the time, so it’s important to have a good relationship with them. We foster a good relationship with emotions by quickly identifying and acknowledging them as they come up. The better our relationship with our emotions, the easier it will be to direct them!”

"One of the fundamental elements of social emotional growth is developing emotion vocabulary. Nadine Levitt's book My Mama Says Inside of Me Lives a Village hits a home run normalizing that all emotions have a place in our lives."

- Dr Scott Edgar Ph.D
(Author of Music Education and Social Emotional Learning: The Heart of Teaching Music)

- Authority Magazine

“I am just sort of floored right now… because, all this time I have invested in kids with ADHD and autism and learning more, I have never heard somebody say look beyond the emotion that is the loudest. What else is going on? And of course we need to do that!”

- Penny Williams

What People Are Saying

“Wonderful Children's Book!!!”

“This book is beautifully written and illustrated. My two children 8 and 5 years old enjoyed reading it. What we particularly love about it as parents are the conversations about feelings that it brings up with both of our kids. It has given our 5 year old in particular a new vocabulary to use about feelings and she'll reference the characters when she's discussing emotions. Definitely a book they remember, talk about and ask to read again.”

- Jade Chatham

“LOVE IT!”

“If you are a parent, you have to read this book. We are in different times now where emotions are heightened by an overflow of social media, news shows, and hyper-tense conversations on all subjects and no matter how much we try to protect our children, they are hearing and feeling things. Teaching them to process it all and communicate is so important. This book does it in such a gentle and subtle way. It’s silly yet a really sweet way to prepare our kids. Read it together with the kids. Heck, not even a bad idea for husbands and wives to read without the kids. LOVE IT. Thank you.”

- STEVE

“Lovely and a good message!”

“This is such a lovely story... I bought a couple of these books for my friends with kids but ended up keeping one for myself! ; ). I love how succinctly the story teaches how to handle emotions... and how emotions are all okay, however one is always in control of them.”

- ASH B.

“I simply love the book. It has become such a beautiful book to read with my two year old and my 11 year old loves reading it to her as the emotions we all struggle with are the same. I have gotten multiple for gifts and people are loving. Absolutely recommend.”

- Jonathan B Berg

You might be wondering…

How is this different from other social and emotional learning tools?

As a parent, Nadine found it hard to find material that she wholeheartedly agreed with. Most methods usually teach about emotions one by one. But the reality is that emotions are complex, and they never visit us individually. “I liken it to a watercolor painting, where colors are influenced both by the colors around them and the canvas itself, emotions are influenced by the emotions they present themselves with and the context of the person feeling them too!” says Nadine “The way we look, act and feel is a result of the entire group of emotions, NOT just the single emotion.”

Other methods focus on “controlling” our emotions so we (the adults) can better manage behaviors. My Mama Says empowers children to view emotions as neutral. No other methodology teaches children to develop a relationship with their emotions in such a simple and intuitive way.

Will this really work for my kids?

In a word, YES! If you view this as a starting point and an ongoing conversation rather than a lesson to be taught and only revisited occasionally. Nadine strongly believes that My Mama Says is meant to start healthy conversations between grown-ups and children, which is why she offers such a robust line of supportive learning tools and activities.

What if this just doesn’t “click” with my family?

Nadine’s approach to social and emotional learning is so simple, you will likely wonder why no one has ever talked about feelings like this before. We hear from countless parents, teachers, and caregivers that the My Mama Says book and philosophy has not only been a game changer for their kids, but for themselves as well.

"This is a beautiful book with incredible illustration. It has a great message for kids and the parents reading it to them."
